What does CPAP stand for? What is a CPAP machine?

CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. A physician prescribed CPAP machine delivers air into your airway through tubing and a mask or “nasal pillow“ system. A “sleep study“ will determine the correct amount of air that should be delivered to each patient based on various parameters obtained through the sleep study. Generally speaking, the flow of air creates enough pressure to keep your airway open while you are sleeping, thereby preventing snoring and apnea events.

If I snore, should I use a CPAP machine?

Snoring sounds occur when the flow of air is obstructed in the airway (the passages at the back of the mouth and nose). Snoring is typically more frequent in males. Being overweight may contribute to the problem. Likewise, losing weight may resolve a snoring problem for some.

When should I consider seeing a physician for a sleep study?

See your ENT (Ears, Nose, Throat Doctor), Pulmonologist or family doctor if you snore loudly and disturb others, if you have daytime sleepiness, if you have frequent headaches and tiredness, or if you are aware (or someone tells you) that you stop breathing for short periods of time during the night (you may wake up with a gasp).

If I'm already using CPAP with a nasal mask, what should I do if my mouth keeps coming opened?

Patients who are “mouth-breathers“ may want to consider utilizing a chin strap to hold their chin up OR consider switching to a Full Face Mask (mask that covers the nose & mouth).

What is Rainout and what are the solutions to Rainout?

Rainout is excess condensation in the CPAP delivery tube. To reduce or eliminate this condensation, make sure that the humidification chamber is lower than bed level so water will pool below patient level. Always place the CPAP delivery tube lower than the patient's head so moisture does not reach the mask. Turn down the Humidifier heater control setting to reduce rainout. Use a tube “buddie” or other hose cover to keep the CPAP delivery tube warm, or place it under the patient's bed covers. Consider increasing the temperature of the bedroom.

What are the minimum requirements for using this website?

This website requires a web browser capable of running JavaScript 1.2. Internet Explorer 5.5, Firefox 1.0 and Netscape 6.0 meet the minimum requirements. We recommend using Firefox 1.5 or Internet Explorer 6.0 with JavaScript enabled.

What items do you require a Doctor's Prescription for?

Prescriptions are required for the sale of any CPAP machine to a patient. The prescription should be dated within the past 1 year period and specify the centimeters of water pressure required for the machine set-up. In addition, other class II devices (including machines, humdifiers, and masks) require a RX.

What warranties are offered on CPAP machines?

Most CPAP machines have a manufacturer 2-year warranty. Repairs to machines within that time period will only cost related shipping charges to return the machine to the patient. Most warranties do not cover water damage to a machine. For machines that require repairs after a warranty period, we will receive an estimate from the manufacturer as to the cost of repairs and the patient may decide to have the repairs made or not.

Are there warranties on masks?

The warranty for ResMed masks is 90 days and covers manufacturer defects.
