What does CPAP stand for? What is a CPAP machine?

CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. A physician prescribed CPAP machine delivers air into your airway through tubing and a mask or “nasal pillow“ system. A “sleep study“ will determine the correct amount of air that should be delivered to each patient based on various parameters obtained through the sleep study. Generally speaking, the flow of air creates enough pressure to keep your airway open while you are sleeping, thereby preventing snoring and apnea events.

When should I consider seeing a physician for a sleep study?

We strongly recommend that you see a physician if you snore loudly, have daytime sleepiness, have morning headaches, or if someone has told you that you stop breathing during sleep. This is especially true if you have hypertension or a history of heart disease.

What should I do if i wear a nasal mask and my mouth keeps opening?

Patients who are “mouth-breathers“ may want to consider switching to a Full Face Mask that covers both your nose & mouth. Updated styles of full face masks are comfortable and more effective than older models.

What causes moisture to form in my CPAP tubing?

Moisture formation in CPAP tubing is called Rainout. To reduce or eliminate this condensation you may want to try the following solutions:
- Reduce your humidity setting on the CPAP device
- Make sure that the humidification chamber is lower than the bed level so water drip back into the water chamber.
- Use a hose cover to keep the CPAP delivery tube warm.
- Increase the temperature of the bedroom.

What items require a Doctor's Prescription?

Prescriptions are required for all elements of PAP therapy that require a prescription - PAP devices, masks, tubing, head-gear, filters and humidifier chambers. Most states require that prescriptions be renewed every 12 months. Seeing your physician in an annual basis is a good policy to follow to insure that you have not had any changes in your sleep health.

What warranties are offered on CPAP machines?

Most CPAP machines have a manufacturer 2-year warranty. Repairs to machines within that time period will only cost related shipping charges to return the machine to the patient. Most warranties do not cover water damage to a machine. For machines that require repairs after a warranty period, we will receive an estimate from the manufacturer as to the cost of repairs and the patient may decide to have the repairs made or not.

What warranties are offered on CPAP masks?

Masks are covered for manufacturing defects for 30-90 days.

Are Oral Appliances an effective treatment for sleep apnea?

Oral appliances can be an effective treatment for OSA - but it is impossible to predict what patients will have a good response.
